Patriots advance over Elcho

ELCHO, Wis. – Goodman-Pembine, behind 23 points from Trent Heath and 20 from Alex Whitt, tripped Elcho 61-51 in a WIAA Division 5 boys basketball regional opener Tuesday.

“That was certainly a great win by our team against a very talented group from Elcho,” Patriots coach Paul Whitt said. “I honestly don’t know if we can play better offensively and defensively than we did in the second quarter.”

Goodman-Pembine, down 18-16 after the first quarter, gained momentum with a 23-15 second quarter.

The Patriots had scored a total of nine second-quarter points combined in their previous two games with the Hornets.

“Both teams started slow in the second half, but we didn’t panic,” Whitt said. “I kept reminding them we had the lead and they had to take it from us. We took care of the basketball as well, and that will make any coach happy.”

Alex Whitt also speared 11 rebounds and Roman Grebin handed out four assists.

“Trent and Alex carried us offensively, and didn’t force anything,” coach Whitt said. “They really took good shots all night.

“(Alex) Gardner continues to be a valuable contributor off the bench. We had some foul trouble early, and he was ready when his number was called.”

The Patriots checked the Hornets to 18 points in the second half.

“The stats don’t tell everything about how well our defense played,” he said. “Our team defense after the first quarter was phenomenal, and that takes everyone for that to happen.”

Goodman-Pembine travels to Wausaukee on Friday for the regional semifinal.
