Dollar beats flu bug, foes

BONDUEL, Wis. – Flu-ridden Florence senior Cole Dollar is returning to Madison.

Dollar, who qualified in 2011, earned another state trip Saturday by winding up third in the 160-pound sectional. Coleman’s Dexter Karbon, who pinned Dollar in a third-round match Saturday, and Elcho’s Joey Johnson also qualified for state in the 160-pound class.

Dollar posted decisions over Reedsville’s Elliott Ebert (6-1) and Amherst’s Logan Hermsen (8-4) before facing Karbon.

“Having a bad case of the flu for three days and not practicing in that time did not stop Cole,” said Bobcats coach Jerry Paulson, noting Karbon is the third-ranked wrestler in the state. “Those two wins gained him a spot at state.

“After that the sickness had weakened him and proved too much as he had very little in the tank for the finals and got pinned.”

Dollar forfeited the wrestle back to Joey Johnson of Elcho. Dollar had beaten Johnson four times earlier this season.

Dollar will open the state tournament with Mason McCauley (29-12) of Weston/Ithaca. Match should start around 8 p.m. Thursday at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Florence’s Shawn Paulson (120), Danny Jones (106) and Andrew Kelley (126) also wrestled in the sectional but did not advance.

“Danny Jones, Shawn and Andrew Kelley faced the eventual sectional champs in the first round.

“Although they lost, they fought hard,” coach Paulson said.

The top three finishers in each weight class earn spots at the WIAA state meet.
