IRON MOUNTAIN – Steven J. Pittas, 90, of Iron Mountain and formerly of Hardwood, passed away on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at the Oscar G. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
He was born June 24, 1922, in Gary, Ind., son of the late Demetri and Argiro (Zervos) Pittas. Steve was a 1940 graduate of Lew Wallace High School in Gary. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Steve married Geneva Gafford on March 7, 1942, in Charleston, Mo. She preceded him in death on Jan. 4, 1999.
Steve was employed as a foreman by U.S. Steel in Gary for close to 40 years, retiring in 1976. He moved to Hardwood following his retirement and has resided there since. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Metropolitan.
Steve was a skilled carpenter and enjoyed building several homes over the years. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery and gardening.
Steve is survived by four daughters, Sandra (Kenneth) Coslet and Susan (Victor) Pollard, both of Valparaiso, Ind., Kathy (John) Mattson of Felch, and Stephanie (Wade) Sheldon of King George, Va.; nine grandchildren, Michael (Jackie) Coslet, Jaimi Foreman, Teresa (Ron) Trapp, Steven (Dawn) Pollard, Jeremy Pollard, Kristin (Martin) Lueskow, Matthew Mattson, Jenna (Rob) Petrick and Darin Oman; 13 great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Kenneth, Aaron, Zackary, Jacob, Scott, Austin, Colin, Olivia, Joshua, Geneva, Kayind and Ethan; and two great-great-grandchildren, Kia and Ava.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Steve was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Justin; and a brother, Angelo.
A memorial service will be held in the spring and will be announced at that time.
Burial will be in the Foster City Cemetery.
