Deputy stabbed at ski jumps

IRON MOUNTAIN – A 74-year-old man is in custody as the result of a stabbing incident that occurred during the Continental Cup Ski Jumping Tournament at Pine Mountain on Sunday.

Dickinson County Sheriff Scott A. Celello reports that at approximately 12:05 p.m., two of the deputies patrolling the event were walking near the club house when the suspect approached them from behind and stabbed one of the deputies in the upper back.

The knife was knocked out of the suspect’s hands and he was subdued and taken into custody.

Initial investigation revealed that the suspect had attended the event to target a deputy, although no deputy in particular was the target.

Sheriff Celello also stated that a search warrant was executed at the suspect’s residence in Norway.

The deputy, Lieutenant Derek Dixon, was treated at the scene by Beacon Ambulance. Also assisting the sheriff’s office were officers from the Iron Mountain Police Department and the Kingsford Public Safety Department.

Names of the injured deputy and the suspect are not being released at this time.

Investigation is continuing and a report has been submitted to Dickinson County Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Richards.
