Lake Ottawa Recreation Area closed for winter season
IRON RIVER – Because of timber harvesting, the Lake Ottawa Recreation Area on the Iron River Ranger District of the Ottawa National Forest is temporarily closed, said Iron River District Ranger Norman Nass.
This includes roads leading into Lake Ottawa Campground, the road to the Lake Ottawa boat landing, and portions of the Ge-Che Cross Country Ski Trail. Several other roads within the area are also closed to the public.
“For public safety, several roads in and around the Lake Ottawa Recreation Area will be closed to motorized and over-snow vehicles for the remainder of the 2013 winter season due to logging operations that are occurring in the area,” said Nass.
A Special Closure Order has been signed by Acting Forest Supervisor Randy Charles.
“We recognize that there will be a disruption of winter recreation activities in the area and limitations for access to Lake Ottawa for ice fishing; however, public safety made this decision necessary,” said Nass.
The Ottawa National Forest uses the timber harvest program to maintain healthy and productive forests, while also supporting the timber industry that is important to the local economy.
Any questions related to this closure can be directed to Norman Nass at the Watersmeet/Iron River Districts Office at (906) 358-4551.
