Gladstone owns Division 3

KINGSFORD – Gladstone made short work of the Division 3 District 165 wrestling tournament Wednesday at Kingsford High School.

The Braves, who gained a first-round bye when Menominee elected not to participate, downed Negaunee 72-9 in the finals.

Negaunee and Kingsford wrestled to a 30-30 draw in the first match, with criteria (three pins) sending the Miners to the championship match.

Negaunee’s Tyler Lajoie (160), Mike Luoma (130) and Brody Rosten (135) posted pins over Kingsford’s Drake Griggs, Austin Beaulier and Eli Martonen. The remainder of the matches were forfeits.

Of the 14 weight classes in the finals, only four were staged – Negaunee’s Lajoie (160) pinned Cole Tardiff, :51; Gladstone’s Jake Cronick (171) pinned Kyle Scheiding, :36; Gladstone’s Jared Syverson (125) pinned Luoma, 1:23, and Negaunee’s Rosten decisioned Bobby Beauchamp 5-4.

Menominee cited small team numbers in not appearing for the tournament. Gladstone advances to the team regional Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Cheboygan.

A Division 3 individual district takes place Saturday at Negaunee.
