Snow possible for ski jumps

IRON MOUNTAIN – Ski jumpers from 10 different countries will see temperatures in the 20s and 30s with a slight chance of snow when they compete in the 74th Bellin Health Pine Mountain Continental Cup on Saturday and Sunday.

Keith Cooley, meteorologist with the National Weather Service of Marquette, said there is a 20 percent chance of snow showers on Saturday and Sunday.

High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 20s on Friday, low 30s on Saturday and low to mid 30s on Sunday. No snow accumulation is anticipated for Friday, but snowfall up to an inch is expected Thursday night into Friday morning.

Cooley said winds will not be above 10 mph Friday, but winds on Saturday afternoon will be 15 to 20 mph. Winds of 5 mph are predicted for Sunday.

The Bellin Health Pine Mountain Continental Cup International Ski Jumping Competition is held at the Pine Mountain Ski Jumping Complex off Pine Mountain Road in Iron Mountain.

Kiwanis Ski Club officials anticipate teams from the following countries: USA, Austria, Finland, Germany, Poland, Norway, Slovenia, Netherlands, Romania, and Kazakhstan.

Ski jumpers began arriving this week.

A Meet the Skiers & Business After Hours will be held on Thursday at Pine Mountain Resort from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sponsored by Pine Mountain Resort, Wells Fargo Bank and Dickinson County Cancer Unit/Loan Closet, the event is open to the public. There is no charge to attend Meet the Skiers, but reservations are requested. Call the Dickinson Area Partnership at 774-2002 to make reservations.

Organizers said to bring the kids and meet the skiers and coaches.

Tickets for the jumps can be purchased for $20 before Friday at the following locations: Iron Mountain-Kingsford Credit Union, Hometowne Building Supply, Woodward Bar, Super One Foods, the Drug Store, Bimbo’s Wine Press, Mayme’s, Habitat for Humanity Restore, R&S Liquor, Champion Inc., Frog Country, Wells Fargo Bank, Eureka Tire, DCH, Pine Mountain Resort, Econo Foods, River Valley State Bank, First National Bank of Niagara, Forward Financial, Northern Michigan Bank, Tom & Jo’s, Bob & Jerry’s, Mike’s on Main, First National Bank of Norway, Big 10 Sports Bar, Dickinson Area Partnership, Oldenberg Group, and First National Bank & Trust of Iron Mountain-Kingsford all locations.

Cost of tickets go up on Friday.

Weekend schedule of events:

– Friday: 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., official training

– Saturday: 11 a.m., trial round; 12:30 p.m., opening ceremony; and 1 p.m., competition one (two rounds of jumping).

– Sunday: 11 a.m., trial round; 12:30 p.m., opening ceremony; and 1 p.m., competition one (two rounds of jumping).

An awards ceremony will follow the competition on the outrun.

All times are subject to change depending on weather conditions.

Pine Mountain Road will be closed to through traffic from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday for the annual jumping competition.
