The mind of the person
The article on the front page of the Jan. 29 Iron Mountain Daily News titled “Active Training Shooter Program” stated in the first paragraph of the article that there was a school shooting every day of the last week in the United States.
I myself hadn’t heard, read or seen of a shooting everyday of that week, not on the internet, television or newspapers including the Iron Mountain Daily News, I could only remember one that I knew of.
I then searched the internet under list of schools shootings in the United States to see what I could find regarding these shootings, I found information about the subject on Wikipedia which showed only one school shooting in the United States for the last week which was on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013 in Houston, Texas.
Although I couldn’t find any reference in regards to a shooting every day of the last week in regards to school shootings I did find that there were five other school shooting in the month of January 2013 – two in the second week and three in the third week, although there were shootings every day of that week they were not school shootings. That got me to where I did more research on school shootings and found that the first school shooting in the United States took place on July 26, 1764.
Wikipedia gives a chronological list of school shootings in the United States starting from 1764 to present day.
Prior to 1989, there were only a handful of incidents in which two or more victims were killed by firearms at a school, including the 1966 University of Texas massacre, the 1974 Olean High School shooting, the 1976 California State University, Fullerton massacre, and the 1979 Cleveland Elementary School shooting (the 1927 Bath School disaster was a bombing, not a shooting, with a firearm used only to detonate explosives). School shootings prior to the late 1990s, when they received intensive press and official coverage, were considered local incidents and may be substantially underreported in current tabulations, raising questions as to whether school shootings are actually increasing or are simply receiving more attention in recent years. From 1989 to 2012, there have been at least 40 such incidents.
What I did find very disturbing is that in the month of January 2013 the six school shooting in the United States are the most in anyone month throughout American history. There were ten school shootings in the United States during 2012 and sadly within the month of January 2013 there have already been more than half as many as all of last year.
If we look back at our country throughout American history we can find that we have been a violent nation from the start. This is how our nation began from the Revelatory War to the wars we are in today, in between these we have had Indian Wars to take the land, a Civil War that divided the nation, bank, stage coach, train robberies and cattle rustling. The roaring 20’s, the Depression of the 30’s all of which involved guns and killing of people, all the laws and regulations that have been enacted have not deterred the killing of each other over these times.
Guns, knives, clubs etc., etc., etc. don’t kill. It’s what is going through the mind of the person that commits these crimes and uses whatever weapon is at their disposal.
All the regions, governments laws and regulations that have been written have not deterred the killing of each other over time. The Bible says Cain killed his brother Able and the killing of another person has not stopped since.
We can only hope that as humans our morals would be for good rather than evil.
