Knights leave no doubt

NORWAY – Norway made history on its home mat Saturday.

The Knights, with three individual champions, registered their first Mid-Peninsula Conference team wrestling title in convincing fashion.

“The kids wrestled awesome,” said Coach Nick Burklund, his Knights amassing 176 points to 108 for runner-up Westwood. “They left everything on the mat.

“We knew it could be a tight finish for the conference but the kids went out there and wanted it. They got us the pins in matches we needed and fought for the full six-minute match.”

Norway’s Zac Decremer (103), Taylor Bonetti (160) and Jacob Rehn (171) claimed MPC honors. Decremer and Rehn notched pins while Bonetti avenged a loss to Manistique’s Zavier Gonzalez from last week.

Norway, with 13 wrestlers in the medal round, sent eight to the finals.

“This is what we needed to win the tournament,” Burklund said. “We knew we needed to dominate and that’s what the kids did.”

The Knights added seconds from Tim Huddleston (112), Donny Houle (119), Jake Wetsel (125), Cayleb Winkler (130) and Jordan Neumann (189); thirds from Jake Julian (135), Garrett Bonetti (145) and Kasey Siegle (275), and fourths from Cody Spade (140) and Pat Guffey (215).

Siegle gained third by pinning Manistique’s Landon Burton, who defeated the Knights’ 275-pounder earlier in the season.

“The coaches couldn’t be happier,” Burklund said. “The kids did what we asked them to do and we accomplished one of our team goals we set for the year. We still have one to go so we will have to have a good week of practice and keep working hard.

Iron Mountain garnered titles from Jared Gauthier (119), Alex Edwards (125) and Corbin Henkel (135). Tanner Chouinard (140) tacked on a third and Aurelio Barraza had a fourth.

Iron Mountain hosts an MHSAA Division 4 district team tournament Saturday. The Mountaineers and Knights collide at 5 p.m., with Bark River to meet the winner.
