GOODMAN, Wis. – Elwyin Charles “Al” Smith, 87, of Goodman, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Aug. 28, 1925, in Goodman, the son of the late Charles and Mary (Duff) Smith. He attended Goodman Schools and had worked for C.C.C. in Antigo. Al joined the U.S. Navy, where he served for four years.
He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving for 24 years. He was a member of the Chosin Few, the survivors of the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea, during the Korean War. He retired from the Army as a staff sergeant.
Al married Elisabeth “Liz” Scheufler in Ludwigsberg, Germany, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 17, 2005.
He was an active member of the Union Protestant Church. Al enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, four wheeling, camping, and going out to eat. He loved to feed the birds and the deer outside his kitchen window.
He had a dog biscuit for every dog, but especially for Buddy, Bo, and Hunter and trained them how to get the biscuit behind their owner’s back.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandsons especially his time fishing, hunting, or having a fish fry with them. His two great grandbabies were the apples of his eye and gave him the joy to live.
He is survived by his son, Edwin (Diane) Smith; three grandsons, Michael (Samantha) Smith, David (Maria Kiszonas) Smith, and Craig (Candi) Smith; his two great-grandchildren, Peyton Elisabeth Smith and Lukas Elwyin Smith; all of Goodman; and nieces and nephews.
Al was preceded in death by two sisters, Reia Fewless and Ethel Burbey.
Visitation will be Saturday at Union Protestant Church from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Funeral services will follow Saturday at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Tim Smith will officiate.
Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery.
