QUINNESEC – Chester W. Shelgren, 92, of Quinnesec, formerly of Stambaugh, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Freeman’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford.
He was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Gaastra, son of the late Oscar and Pearl (Moger) Shelgren. He attended school in Stambaugh, graduating from Stambaugh High School in 1939.
Chester enlisted in the United States Air Force after graduation and saw action in Okinawa during World War II. Upon being honorably discharged he returned home, where he married Shirley Cavadias on Nov. 11, 1950, in Gaastra. He worked for the Iron County Road Commission for 30 years, before retiring in 1983. He was a lifelong member of the Iron River Elks Lodge and the American Legion Post 17 of Stambaugh. He loved hunting and fishing, but his true passion was gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Orville Shelgren; a sister, Editha Gedvick; a son-in-law, Timothy Recla; and a granddaughter-in-law, Jessica Recla.
Chester is survived by his children, Brad (Trudy) Shelgren of Iron River, Denise Recla (Doug Buck) of Quinnesec, Cassie (Tom) Domina of Chicago, and Tracy (Alan) Borchardt of Maple Grove, Minn.; grandchildren, Craig (Erin) Recla, Doug (Katy) Recla, Josh (Jennifer) Domina, Jake Domina, and Jaci Domina; and two great-grandchildren, Timmy Recla and Lou Recla.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude for the loving care and family-like environment the Freeman Nursing Home provided.
