Marvin Hicks

KINGSFORD – Marvin D. Hicks, 74, of Kingsford, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at the Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Administration Medical Center in Milwaukee.

He was born on Dec. 5, 1938, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Howard and LaVerne (Wahlstrom) Hicks. Marvin has been a resident of this area most of his life and spent about 10 years traveling the United States and parts of the world. He attended Kingsford Schools and joined the United States Coast Guard right out of high school. He was honorably discharged from the Coast Guard in 1968.

Over the years, Marvin has worked for several local businesses. He was a talented handyman and was known for being able to build or repair just about anything. Marvin had been a member of the Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50, the Carpenter-Clash American Legion Post 363, and the Iron Mountain Veterans of Foreign Wars. Marvin also volunteered at the Oscar G. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brother, Bruce, gardening and canning his home grown vegetables and venison. He also loved to cook for family gatherings. Marvin will be missed by his beloved toy poodles, Maggie and Rusty.

He is survived by his wife, Murial; children, Kathy Hicks of California, Karen (Rick) Cromwell of California, Marvin Hicks Jr. of California, Carolyn Hicks of Arizona, Sheri Hicks of Iron Mountain, Shannon Hicks of Detroit, and Bradley Hicks of Iron Mountain; brothers and sisters, Roger (Kay) Hicks of Kingsford, Marilyn (Jerry) Koller of Maine, Bruce (Myrna) Hicks of Iron Mountain, Charlotte Groeneveld of Illinois, Beverly (David) Powell of Kingsford, Dale Hicks of Kingsford, Doug (Diane) Hicks of Kingsford, Ginger (Danny) Sturm of Illinois, and Randy Hicks of Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Shane, Travis, Tasha, Pricilla, Kristy, Ricky, Alan, Kayla, Aubree, Jacob, Victoria, Molley, Carly, Avery, Aaliyah; great-grandchildren, Emily, Caleb, Cassidy, AJ ; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Nault.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Funeral services will follow Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Lee Liverance will officiate.

Military graveside honors will be accorded at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23 at Iron Mountain Cemetery Park.
