Mountaineers hold off Norway for first win
NORWAY – Climbing out of an 8-0 hole in the first quarter, Iron Mountain snapped an 0-8 start to the season.
Recovering from their slow start, the Mountaineers built a first-half lead and held on for 43-42 win over Norway.
“It feels good to have a win,” Iron Mountain head coach John Hogberg said. “It was a struggle, but we took care of the ball, and I think the girls just wanted a win.”
Katelynn Johnson led Iron Mountain with 13 points, but it was a spark from sophomore Alena Herman that helped the Mountaineers grab their halftime lead.
Herman, in her second varsity start, netted seven of her nine points in a second quarter that saw the Mountaineers out score the Knights 16-6 for an eight-point halftime advantage.
Norway charged back after the break, dropping in five of their eight threes in the second half.
“It kept them in the game,” Hogberg said.
Rachel Conery (11 points) sank back-to-back treys to tie the game 27-27.
Baily Grayvold went to work with 14 of her game high 21 points after the intermission and gave Norway a lead at 32-31 at the end of three.
Iron Mountain, 10-of-12 at the line, grabbed the lead for good with 1:40 to play thanks to a couple of free throws from Johnson.
Iron Mountain missed another free throw with about 20 seconds to play but recovered the rebound.
Norway didn’t foul until about five seconds remained. And even though Iron Mountain missed again, the Knights didn’t have enough time for a game-winning chance.
Abby Gerhard led Iron Mountain with 11 rebounds.
“We limited our turnovers and just played smarter,” Hogberg said.
Norway won the jayvee game 34-23. Iron Mountain’s freshmen won 61-29, getting 16 from Katie Brule.
Iron Mountain 1-8 (1-4) hosts Ishpeming Thursday. Norway (4-4, 2-3) plays at Stephenson Friday.
