U.P. woman killed in crash

MARQUETTE – Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred Monday evening in Houghton County.

Pelkie resident Gloria Karinen, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene after officers were dispatched to a two-vehicle personal injury crash at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Askel Road in Portage Township.

Police said a preliminary investigation revealed 52-year-old Rick VanAlstine, also of Pelkie, was traveling east on Askel Road when he struck a deer that had run onto the roadway. VanAlstine lost control of his vehicle and skidded into the oncoming lane of traffic, where it collided with Karinen, who was westbound.

VanAlstine was transported to Portage Health Hospital and later transferred to Marquette General Hospital due to injuries sustained in the crash. He was listed in serious condition at MGH this morning.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Otter Lake First Responders, Hurontown Fire & Rescue and Mercy Ambulance.
