Eagles upend Nordic girls

FELCH – Stephenson overcame a fourth-quarter surge from freshman Elizabeth Charlevoix and defeated North Dickinson 64-54 in non-conference girls basketball Friday at Carl F. Lemin Gymnasium.

Stephenson, with five players scoring at least eight points in the game, jumped out to a 19-8 lead in the first quarter.

“We got off to a rough start and then we battled back,” said Coach Mike Roell, whose Nordics trailed by two late in the third quarter. “It was a game of runs and Stephenson made the plays down the stretch.

“We didn’t give up and played really hard. I’m proud of our effort.”

Charlevoix scored 10 of her team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter. Miranda Jacobson chipped in 12 points and Chelsey Stroud had 10.

“Liz Charlevoix really came on late in the game,” Roell said.

Missed lay-ups hurt Nordics.

“We make our lay-ups we could have been right there,” he said. “But we are getting better. There’s positive stuff to build on.”

North Dickinson (0-7) visits West Iron on Tuesday.

McKenna Christian’s 19 points propelled North Dickinson’s junior varsity past Stephenson 49-33.
