Trojans take out Wykons
CRYSTAL FALLS – Forest Park, behind Lexi Gussert’s 37 points, decked West Iron County 61-39 in non-conference girls basketball Friday at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium.
Gussert, who nailed seven triples, picked up three fouls and sat out the final two minutes of the first half.
Sierra Robarge added 11 points for the Trojans, who bolted to a 22-8 first-quarter lead behind 16 points and four treys by Gussert.
“We just started off red hot,” Trojans coach Jeff Syrjanen said.
Megan Miatech’s 12 points paced the Wykons, who didn’t threaten in the second half.
“We obviously knew who we were supposed to guard, but we gave her way too much space,” Wykons coach Mike Dallavalle said of Gussert. “She made us look flimsy on defense. We couldn’t get anything going offensively. We were all out of sorts.”
Gussert also led Forest Park with nine rebounds, four assists, five steals and four blocks.
Maria Stankewicz, who scored eight points, held primary defensive responsibility on Wykons season-leading scorer Kylee Erickson and helped limit her to three points.
“She stepped up big time,” Syrjanen said. “She really did a good job. We were focussed on taking her out of the game because we know she is a tremendous scorer. All our guards did a great job of not letting her get good looks.”
Forest Park (8-0) hosts Mid Peninsula on Monday and West Iron (1-5) entertains North Dickinson on Tuesday.
Melina Doering’s 12 points helped Forest Park’s junior varsity down WIC 50-40.
