NORWAY – Eleanor Lorraine Haferkorn, 90, of Norway, went to meet the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, after a brief illness at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family and friends.
Eleanor was born in Norway on Nov. 4, 1922, to the late Roy and Mabel (Welch) Albert.
She married the love of her life Richard Haferkorn on June 24, 1941, at St Barbara Catholic Church in Vulcan. He preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 2007.
Eleanor was very active and independent – volunteering her time extensively for St. Vincent de Paul, and the Jake Menghini Museum and she worked as a teacher’s aide for the Norway-Vulcan Area Schools.
She was a member of and loved attending St. Barbara Catholic Church. She loved her family deeply, and had many wonderful and true friends that will always be remembered by her family for their kindness. She loved gardening and tending to her yard, and could be seen “moving snow” in her driveway on many an early winters’ morning.
Eleanor is survived by her six children, George (Merry) Haferkorn of Hayward, Wis., Joseph (Nancy) Haferkorn of Norway, Ellen Hawley of Milwaukee, Tracy (Janice) Haferkorn of West Bend, Wis., Jim (Tonia) Haferkorn of Galena, Ohio, and Mary McFarlin of Chicago; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; a brother, Roy Albert of Beverly Hills, Mich.; and a sister, Caroline Albert de Ferrero of The Woodlands, Texas.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years, Richard, and her sister Elizabeth (Plourde) Corbeill.
Eleanor’s family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Paul Hayes, of Norway, who took such good care of her over the years, and the kind and gentle nursing staff at Dickinson County Hospital for their exceptional care in her last few days.
Family will greet friends on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Barbara Church in Vulcan.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at St. Barbara Church with Fr. Timothy Ekaitis presiding.
Interment will be held in the spring at the Norway Township Cemetery.
