GLADSTONE – No one was injured in a semi-truck fire Wednesday near Rapid River.
The incident occurred at 5:40 a.m. on U.S. 2 about one mile south of Rapid River.
Troopers from the Gladstone post of the Michigan State Police said that Robert Lustila, 56, of Germfask was driving a 2010 International truck/tractor owned by WJZ & Sons Harvesting when he heard a loud bang.
When Lustila pulled over to investigate, he saw four-foot flames coming out of the chimney stack and the hood. Lustila was unable to re-enter the truck to retrieve the fire extinguisher, due to the smoke and flames.
Troopers said that the semi was fully engulfed in flames by the time they reached the scene.
Although the vehicle was a total loss, its load of logs was loaded onto another rig, troopers added.
U.S. 2 was shut down for approximately three hours. All traffic was re-routed to Bayshore Drive.
Assisting at the scene were the Masonville Township Fire Department, Brampton Township Fire Department, Delta County Road Commission, Delta County Sheriff’s Department, and Gladstone Public Safety Department.
