Knights win Super Duals meet
MENOMINEE – Norway, with five wrestlers unbeaten on the day, rolled to the title in the Menominee Super Duals wrestling meet.
The Knights chalked up a 5-0 record, beating Menominee 49-28, Gwinn 77-6, Marinette 75-5, Manistique 54-15 and Green Bay Preble-East 52-19.
“With the holidays, practices were cut down but the kids kept their weight well in line and practiced very hard,” Norway Coach Nick Burklund said. “We told the kids that we have a very good shot at winning the tournament and that was a big motivator for the wrestlers.”
Zac DeCremer (112, 1 pin), Don Houle (125), Cody Spade (140, 3 pins) and Jordan Neumann (189, 3 pins) recorded 5-0 marks while Casey Siegle (285, 3 pins) finished 4-0.
“We were blessed to have a full team covering all weights,” Burklund said. “The kids showed up focused and ready to wrestle.
“When we won our pool, the kids knew going into the finals facing Manistique and Green Bay Preble was going to be very tough. But the kids wrestled their matches and rose to the challenge leaving everything on the mat.”
Norway’s Izaac Degenaer (103, 4-1 record), suffered his first loss of the season.
Other Norway ledgers follow (weight class, record, pins):
Timmy Huddleston (119, 4-1, 1), Jake Wetsel (130, 4-1, 1), Jake Julian (135, 3-2),
Garrett Bonetti (145, 3-2, 1), Travis Moon (152, 2-3 1 pin), Taylor Bonetti (160, 3-2 2 pins), Jake Rehn (171, 3-2 1 pin) and Pat Guffey (215, 4-1, 2 pins).
Iron Mountain recorded a 2-3 mark with four going 5-0 and receiving a medal – David Jones (119), Alex Edwards (125), Jared Gauthier (130) and Tanner Chouinard (145).
“Overall, I am pleased with the team’s performance,” said Mountaineer coach Brandon Rutter, noting just six wrestlers competing.
Mountaineers’ Jacob Weslin (4-1 at 140) and Corbin Henkel (4-1 at 130) also fared well.
Weslin lost a close decision to Manistique’s Cole Gonzalez, a 2012 state qualifier.
“Weslin was right there at the end but ran out of time,” Rutter said. “I look forward to those two meeting up again in the future.
“David Jones had a good day of wrestling. Alex Edwards, Jared Gauthier and Tanner Chouinard also had a strong performances.”
